Publisher Description

Alpin turns your iPhone into three simple tools for the backcountry.

INCLINOMETER
Line the black guide-line up with the slope you intend to ski and read the angle. The
indicator changes color to show when you are looking at avalanche-prone terrain.

SLIDE ZONE
Aim the crosshairs at the top of the slope above you to judge whether you are standing
somewhere an avalanche could reach - while your partner is skiing, for instance. The
indicator changes color as the exposure increases.

WAYFINDING
Elevation, coordinates, and compass heading at a glance.

SETTINGS
Choose metric or imperial, and decimal or degrees/minutes coordinates. Alignment
assistance guides your phone into a correctly-oriented position so the reading is honest.

PRIVACY
Alpin has no account and no servers. Location, camera, and motion are read on your device
and never stored or transmitted. Nothing leaves your phone.

IMPORTANT
Alpin is not a substitute for avalanche education, the forecast, or your rescue gear
(beacon, probe, shovel). Use it as a quick spot-check alongside your own judgement - not
as the basis for decisions in the field. Use at your own risk.

Version History Wayfinding now has a real compass. The dial turns beneath a fixed marker, north is picked out in red, and it ticks every thirty degrees so you can hold a bearing without watching the screen.

It also says when it cannot be trusted. A transceiver, ski poles, or a magnetic case will pull the needle, and Alpin now tells you so rather than showing a confident number. The bearing is still there if you decide you need it.

Elevation and coordinates are set much larger, with each label above its reading instead of in front of it, so they can be read at arm's length.

Alignment assistance has been redrawn as a horizon you bring level with two fixed marks, and it now fades away once you are square rather than sitting on the screen. It is on by default.

Units can follow your device or be set to metric or imperial outright, and bearings can be measured from true or magnetic north. 2.2.0 Sep 15 Alpin is now available in 14 languages, including German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Danish and Finnish.

Alpin now runs natively on iPad.

The safety notice has been rewritten to say plainly what Alpin can and cannot tell you. It is no longer buried under pages of legal text, which now lives on the web.

Slope readings show degrees and follow your region's number format, units default to metric or imperial to match your region, and text scales with your device's text size setting.
